What context helps you understand a passage from a sacred text?
OriginalEnglish
A short quotation can raise a good question, but it can also leave out the setting that gives it meaning.
When you read a sacred text, what helps you understand a difficult passage? For example, do you look at the surrounding verses, the translation, the historical setting, or a commentary from within the tradition?
If you'd like to discuss a particular passage, identify the text and the location so others can find it. Keep any quotation brief and name the translation or edition when you can.
Please distinguish the wording of the passage from your interpretation. Different readings can be explored without treating one member as the spokesperson for a whole religion.
